DPC (Damp Proof Course)

"A horizontal barrier built into masonry walls (usually 150mm above external ground level) that prevents groundwater rising into the structure. Required by UK Building Regulations since 1875."

In detail

Traditional DPC is slate, bitumen, or engineering brick; modern builds use plastic DPC. External paint and render must stop above the DPC — bridging it causes trapped moisture and spalling.
