Rising Damp

"Moisture that travels upward through masonry by capillary action, usually due to a failed or missing damp-proof course. Typically visible as a tide mark up to 1m above ground level."

Before redecorating affected walls, identify the cause (bridged DPC, raised external ground level, defective gutters). A chemical DPC injection or physical DPC replacement is followed by re-plastering and only then repainting with a breathable paint.
