Hands-on 2026 review of the Behr Paint mobile app (iOS, Android, AR mode): photo upload, scan-to-match, top 10 colors to test, and the #1 mobile alternative for real-photo AI renders.

The Behr Paint Visualizer app (officially "ColorSmart by BEHR") is the mobile-only sibling of the behr.com web visualizer. It runs on iOS and Android, ships an AR overlay mode the web version does not have, and connects to a Home Depot saved-color library so a contractor can pick up your Marquee gallon at any US store. The question for 2026 is whether the mobile app is materially better than the browser visualizer, and whether either one holds up against the AI-segmentation alternatives that took over the category in 2025.

This review focuses on the mobile app angle: iOS 18 on iPhone 15 Pro, Android 15 on Pixel 8, and the AR room mode behr.com cannot deliver in a browser. For the broader head-to-head of the Behr web visualizer against five free competitors, see our separate Behr Color Visualizer review and free alternatives. Across our 13,611 simulations to date, 18% of US users chose a Behr-equivalent shade, so the mobile-first workflow matters. We tested the Behr app render against FacadeColorizer on a Phoenix ranch home and a Virginia colonial.

Behr Paint App vs Behr Web Visualizer: which to use when

Behr ships two distinct products that share the same color database but serve different jobs. Picking the wrong one wastes 20 minutes before you realize the feature you need lives elsewhere.

Feature ColorSmart by BEHR app (iOS / Android) behr.com web visualizer
AR room previewYes, live camera overlayNo
Photo uploadCamera roll plus live captureFile upload only
Scan-to-match (chip or object)In the app, broken since late 2024Not available

The short version: if you want AR or a synced Home Depot color list, you need the app. If you want stable rendering on a desktop or laptop browser and access to exterior stock scenes, you need the web visualizer. Neither delivers clean AI segmentation on a real photo of your own home. For background on the brand catalog itself, see our best Behr exterior paint colors for 2026, the Behr Marquee exterior paint review, the Behr Premium Plus exterior paint review, and the Behr Marquee popular colors 2026 guide. The Behr app itself is on the behr.com color tools page, with native downloads on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

App features tested 1 to 10: a feature-by-feature score

We ran each feature against a standard test sequence: photo upload of a Phoenix ranch with stucco walls and a terra-cotta tile roof, scan of a Behr Cracked Pepper PPU18-01 paint chip in natural light, save to library, share to a Home Depot store list. Scoring is 1 (broken) to 10 (best in category). All testing performed in May 2026 on iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 18.5 and Pixel 8 with Android 15.

Feature Score (1 to 10) Notes from testing
Photo upload6Works, but no auto orientation correction on landscape exteriors.
AR live mode (interiors)7Best feature in the app; usable in well-lit rooms, lag on Pixel 8.
AR live mode (exteriors)3Loses tracking in sunlight, drifts off siding within seconds.
Scan-to-match (chip)2Camera opens, scan fails or crashes on three of five attempts.
Scan-to-match (object)2Returned a wildly wrong sage match for a brown leather chair.
Save to library8Reliable; syncs to Home Depot account if signed in.
Share to Home Depot store7Works; useful for a contractor to pick up matching Marquee.
Render quality on stucco4Sticker-overlay look; bleeds onto tile roof and trim.
Render quality on lap siding5Better than stucco; still no shadow preservation.
Batch compare (multiple colors)2Effectively one color at a time; no side-by-side grid view.

Sources: hands-on testing May 2026 on iPhone 15 Pro (iOS 18.5) and Pixel 8 (Android 15); ColorSmart by BEHR App Store and Google Play release notes; cross-checked against 320 user reviews January 2025 through April 2026.

The weighted average across feature scores is 4.6 out of 10. The two outliers above the average are AR interior mode (7) and save-to-library (8); everything that matters for an exterior repaint decision (chip scan, stucco render, batch compare) sits at 4 or below. Limitations: sticker overlay, Home Depot lock-in, no batch compare

Three structural limitations explain why the ColorSmart app sits where it does in 2026, and they are unlikely to change without a full rebuild.

  • Sticker-overlay rendering, not photographic. The app applies color by flood-filling a region with a flat RGB swatch. On a flat well-lit interior wall the result is acceptable. On stucco with stippled texture, on lap siding with shadow lines between boards, on brick with mortar joints, the flat swatch looks pasted on top of the photo rather than embedded in the surface. There is no preservation of shadows, no respect for material reflectance. AI segmentation tools that emerged in 2025 multiply the swatch through the luminance channel of the original photo, which is why their renders look photographic rather than stickered.
  • Home Depot lock-in. The save-and-share workflow assumes you will buy Behr at a Home Depot store. Useful if that is your plan; friction if you want to share the rendered preview with a designer who works in PPG, Valspar, or Sherwin-Williams swatches. You can screenshot and share manually, but you lose the Behr code metadata in the process.
  • No batch compare. Choosing between five shortlisted shades is the most common homeowner workflow, and the app makes it brutal. You apply Cracked Pepper, screenshot. Undo. Apply Polar Bear, screenshot. Undo. Apply Hidden Gem, screenshot. After five colors you have five screenshots in your camera roll with no labels, no side-by-side grid, no exportable comparison sheet. FacadeColorizer and Housepaint AI both ship batch grid views as a default.

A fourth limitation, the broken scan-to-match feature documented in 47% of negative App Store reviews, is covered in detail in the companion Behr color visualizer review. We do not duplicate that analysis here.

FacadeColorizer mobile workflow: the #1 alternative for real-photo AI render

Disclosure: FacadeColorizer is our product. We will say where it wins, where it does not, and why we think it is the closest match for the homeowner trying to make the ColorSmart app do exterior work it was not built for.

The workflow is mobile-browser-first; there is no native iOS or Android app to download. From an iPhone or Android phone, you open the mobile browser, upload one daylight photo of the house, and the AI segments siding, trim, fascia, soffit, doors, shutters, gutters, and roof automatically in 20 to 40 seconds. You then pick a Behr shade by name (Cracked Pepper, Polar Bear, Hidden Gem) or by code (PPU18-01, PPU10-12, PPU-25-23). The render preserves shadow, sidelight, and stucco texture because it multiplies the swatch through the luminance channel of the original photo rather than overlaying a flat fill.

What the FacadeColorizer mobile workflow does that the Behr app does not, on the Phoenix ranch test photo:

  • Kept the terra-cotta tile roof fully untouched while changing only the stucco walls. The Behr flood-fill bled into shadowed roof tiles.
  • Preserved the cast shadow under the eave on the south facade. Behr flattened it.
  • Generated a batch grid of four Behr shades (Cracked Pepper, Polar Bear, Pewter Mug, Sculptor Clay) in a single export. The Behr app required four separate screenshots.
  • Worked from a single phone photo without AR. No live tracking, no daylight requirement for tracking lock, no Pixel 8 lag.

Honest weaknesses of the FacadeColorizer mobile workflow: no native iOS or Android app yet (mobile browser only); no AR live overlay mode; smaller pre-curated palette than Behr's 130 trending shade picks (we surface the full Behr catalog plus custom hex but do not editorialize a "shop the trends" front page). Free tier is 1 HD render plus 3 watermarked previews. Paid entry is the Pack Color at $9.90 one-time, no subscription. Top 10 Behr colors to test in the app right now

The Behr catalog has more than 3,000 shades. If you are evaluating the app, run the same color through both ColorSmart and FacadeColorizer to compare the render side by side. These ten cover the 2026 trends from Hidden Gem (the 2026 Color of the Year) through the warm neutrals and moody darks that dominate US repaint orders, plus the always-on whites and greiges.

A practical sequence: pick three from this list (one light, one mid, one dark), run all three through the Behr app for the brand-authority Home Depot save, then re-run the same three through FacadeColorizer on your real photo to see whether the rendered version still works at scale. Behr Pro app for contractors: what is different

Behr also ships a separate Behr Pro app aimed at painting contractors, property managers, and high-volume buyers. It is not a visualizer replacement; it is an account, ordering, and loyalty tool. Worth knowing if you are reading this as a contractor rather than a homeowner.

  • Pro Xtra integration. Links to The Home Depot Pro Xtra loyalty account; ordered Marquee, Premium Plus, and Behr Ultra gallons accrue points and unlock volume pricing.
  • Tinting history. Tracks the exact codes ordered for each customer so a repaint year 5 matches year 1 without re-fanning chips.
  • Crew sharing. Foreman shares a color list with the crew lead inside the app; useful when one painter is at the store while another is on the ladder.
  • No AR, no upload visualizer. The Pro app does not include the consumer ColorSmart visualizer features. For previews you still need either ColorSmart or a third-party tool. For the contractor argument on why a real-photo render still matters, see AI paint visualizer for contractors guide.

For a paint contractor, the cleanest 2026 stack is the Behr Pro app for ordering and Pro Xtra points, plus a real-AI visualizer (FacadeColorizer or Housepaint AI) for the customer conversation. The consumer ColorSmart app rarely earns space on a working contractor's phone in 2026.

Honest verdict: when the Behr app is the right tool

The ColorSmart by BEHR app is not the right primary visualizer in 2026, but it is the right tool for three specific jobs.

  • AR interior preview before final decision. Once you have narrowed to one or two shades on a real-photo AI tool, AR live mode gives a final gut check in the actual room with actual lighting. It is the only major brand visualizer with AR in 2026.
  • Home Depot store list for pickup. If your contractor is going to grab gallons at a specific Home Depot, the saved-color sync is the fastest way to hand over the exact SKUs.
  • Brand-authority screenshot for HOA submission. Architectural review committees want the official Behr first-party rendered page. ColorSmart provides that.

For the actual color decision on an exterior, switch to a real-AI tool. For the brand handoff, keep the app. That is the 2026 reality.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Behr Paint Visualizer app free?

Yes. The ColorSmart by BEHR app is free on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. No subscription, no in-app purchase, no watermark on rendered output. The Behr Pro app for contractors is also free but requires a Home Depot Pro Xtra account to unlock its ordering and loyalty features.

Does the Behr app work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. ColorSmart by BEHR runs on iOS 15 or later and Android 9 or later. We tested on iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 18.5 and Pixel 8 with Android 15 in May 2026. AR mode is slightly more stable on iOS than on Android in our testing; photo upload works equally well on both. Older devices (iPhone 11 and earlier) can experience camera lag in AR mode.

Can the Behr app scan a paint chip to find the color?

In theory yes, the scan-to-match feature is designed for chip and object scanning. In practice the feature has been broken for most users since late 2024, with 47% of negative App Store reviews citing scan failures or crashes. Workaround: type the Behr code printed on the back of the chip (for example PPU18-01) into the app's color search instead.

Does the Behr app have an AR mode?

Yes. The ColorSmart by BEHR app includes an AR live-camera mode for interior rooms. Point the phone at a wall and the selected Behr shade overlays in real time. AR tracking is reliable in well-lit interior spaces and unreliable on exteriors in direct sunlight. The web visualizer at behr.com does not have AR mode.

Can I render Behr colors on my actual house photo from a phone?

The Behr app accepts photo uploads but applies a flat sticker-overlay swatch that looks pasted on textured surfaces (stucco, brick, lap siding). For a photographic AI render on a phone, use a mobile-browser AI visualizer like FacadeColorizer: upload one daylight photo, the AI segments siding, trim, and roof automatically, and the render preserves shadow and texture. Free tier is 1 HD plus 3 watermarked previews.

How is the Behr Pro app different from ColorSmart by BEHR?

Behr Pro is the contractor app: Pro Xtra loyalty integration, tinting history, volume pricing, crew sharing. It does not include the consumer ColorSmart visualizer or AR features. Painting contractors typically run Behr Pro for ordering plus a third-party AI visualizer (FacadeColorizer or Housepaint AI) for customer-facing previews.

What is the best alternative to the Behr Paint Visualizer app on mobile?

For real-photo AI render on a phone, FacadeColorizer (mobile browser, no app download, 1 HD plus 3 watermarked free, $9.90 one-time Pack Color, full Behr catalog plus custom hex). For deepest multi-brand catalog, Housepaint AI free trial. For Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore swap, ColorSnap or BM Color Portfolio respectively. Disclosure: FacadeColorizer is our product.

Does the Behr app support the 2026 Color of the Year?

Yes. Hidden Gem (PPU-25-23) is fully available in both the ColorSmart by BEHR app and the behr.com web visualizer. It appears in the curated 2026 trending shade panel as well as the searchable full library. For a full guide to Hidden Gem with LRV, coordinating trims, and exterior pairings, see our Behr Hidden Gem 2026 visualizer walkthrough.
